copying the description here cause no one reads it: forgot to mention that I focus - as always - on women's clothing here, but Pinsent Tailoring should drop his review soon! also check out Costuming Drama's interesting video about some of the issues within the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XQxFcRfWSc&

Dear Meme mom! I have been trying for years to understand on how REAL court dresses were constructed during the Regency Era -- alas, without success! Therefore, I depend on your expertise: Did those ladies wear panniers like their predecessors during the 18th century (albeit circular ones), were their underpinnings constructed like a Spanish farthingale from way back, or did British courtiers invent something entirely new, i.e. a kind of flexible hoop construction that anticipated the crinoline by more than four decades? And did the British court dress have any impact on early Victorian fashions, when women all over Europe started to sport much wider gowns with an almost natural waist (i.e. just a few after the hoop-dress court style was abolished at the discretion George IV)?

Could you please do a review of this drama called Still Star Crossed. Like I want to know your thoughts on it
Thomas Jamison
You might find 'Sartor Resartus' by Thomas Carlyle to be of interest to you. It is about a philosopher who constructs a philosophy of clothing. Hardly anyone ever really gets the joke, but it is a fascinating work from any perspective.
Amy Lynn Hunt
Since 2002!? I have shoes older than that. OK, I have *everything* older than that. Help me, I hoard. But also, American made Converse? A girl with Fibro's best friend.

@Mary Blackwing thank you!

Take away from this is that if you know a ton about a niche subject, yeah a Hollywood-type show will bother the heck out of you for its inaccuracies. I don't give two hoots about the costumes not being historically perfect, but don't even get me started on the historical nightmare of their music references. (That's my niche, and I don't see her remarking on what an atrocity THAT was!!!) lol
Kate Brady
This is why i havnt bothered watching it at all
Nichiirawberry
I don't think it was really necessary to use the proper fabrics for each costume, and the wigs too. A professional would probably be bothered because they could easily distinguish the quality of the materials, but an average viewer wouldn't. It's great to know the inaccuracy of it tho.
Ysbrand1980
Nah they are quite ugly and unflattering... didn't enjoy the show. It's for lazy people.
Susana Castaño
Well... if they would've wanted to stick to the era, wouldn't have chosen black people to represent some characters. For me they achieved what they wanted: for us to fall in love with the serie.
Nicole J.
I am one of the only girls I know that absolutely hated the show and couldn’t get past the second episode. The historical innacuracy and the boring storyline that relies solely on sex scenes to keep it interesting; it’s an easy pass for me.
awesome
Please make a video about WANDAVISION decades clothing 😍😍🙏

lmao i was wondering the same thing like why wear a corset when the dresses are loose and you can't see them lmao hahah
Kenyah McIntosh-Brown
Re the story being like American’s view of English society. It totally comes off that way, particularly when the books are written in American English lol 😂
Leigh Cochran
Karolina only mentioned it in a quick flash card, but indeed, WTH? No woman would have gone out without her bonnet! Mon dieu!
Zoe Nadel
You’re very annoying. I don’t know if you’ve ever worked on film /show but it takes a lot more than you know, I work in costumes. I’ve worked with the co designer from Bridgeton, and he’s Amazing!
Bronny
The music in this show made me LIVID

bridgerton wasn't made with the intent of being historically accurate and that's perfectly fine (in fact i bloody loved the whole show).
the thing that bothers me is when period pieces/dramas are trying to be historically accurate but fail miserably... if the intent from the get-go isn't to be hisotrically accurate then i'm fine with it
Paije Peri
There are so many reviewers of Bridgertpn out there that are historical purists and kind of snobs. This series was set in an alternate universe in which King George III married a statuesque black queen and Regency England was diverse. If you accept the alternate universe, the fashion style of this Queen Charlotte would influence the rest of society. She is a woman of color, her hair and wigs reflect that. As a queen she wouldn’t have to force herself into adopting white lady hair, she sets the style.
myettechase
*~some~* people: ugh why are there so many black people?? i’m not racist, i just think it’s uNrEaLiStIc
those same people: omg did u hear the vitamin string quartet version of Thank U Next during the suitor scene 😍😍😍

Pleaseeee do a costume review of The Great!

I wanted to like the show, and I don't even care about historical accuracy (this isn't BBC) but can we please, please talk about the literal r*pe scene that is so callously ignored and the trauma that comes with it literally non-existant because honestly, the show is horrible for this reason and this reason only.
Mary Torbey
Please do Hailee Steinfeld's show "Dickinson."
nicii179
I honestly gotta say i love that they didnt aim gor accuracy with their costumes, hair, music etc. it gives it a super fresh feeling that fits well with the storyline of equality for poc and women standing up for themselves. the scenes with the lightning are just so stunningly beautiful with the glitter on the dresses (the reflections). while the corset on bare skin part angered me i really enjoyed just watching a light-hearted period series without the weight of strict accuracy. since they didnt aim for accuracy, i totally agree with you that that is what makes it work. i read a comment about the show being the weirdest mixture of pride and prejudice and gossip girl and i think that describes it super well.
Caissa Palomino
Who cares if it Is históric accurate, i really enjoy it and that’s it
Hall Stuart
Would it be possible to review the men's clothing? I love men's fashion from this period but also have no idea what is historically accurate.
Maya Andersson
The queen was based on Queen Charlotte who hated the regency style with a passion and actually stuck to styles of the past, so the fact that it is outdated makes more sense and is more historically accurate
Angel CityGirl
I am fine with the fact that I'm the only person on earth that was BORED by Bridgerton and was not interested in any of the characters. YAWNS-ville.😄😄

Have you seen the show Reign? I don’t have the historical fashion expertise to thoroughly decimate its lack of authenticity, but even I could recognize multiple pieces that would NOT have fit in 16th century Europe (mermaid tail skirts, fishnet sleeves, a bubblegum pink sleeveless prom dress, etc.)
Anastassia Lobos
Now everyone loves Bridgerton and its aesthetics while there are many much better quality movies that have never been rated as they deserve
Erica H. Ljung
People just have to hire Karolina as an outside consultant in order to not make these misstakes. Costume designers must have learned some clothing history when apprenticing/studying, right?
Raquel Vier
Omg Bridgerton is awful. I couldn't even get through 1 episode. Absolute trash. Horrible.
Lady Calamity
I appreciated that segue into needing chocolate.
Ruby Buttons
I liked the costumes, they aren’t outstanding or anything but I thought they were very fitting with the tone of the show. The second I saw the first character dressed in polyester and plastic glitter I knew this was not going to be anything like your typical Austen regency drama.
I’m just really excited to see costume designers getting to use the usual symbolism they have to enhance a characters personality in a really brazen and unapologetic way. 😄

The bridgerton family series is my favorite romance novel series! Julia Quinn always does amazing historical romances (unfortunately not entirely historically accurate but still amazing) I will admit that I haven't read all of it, so Maria edgecomb being married and marina Thompson confuse me too (which book were they in?) But while it's still not completely like the books themselves it is still amazing!😍 and the queen's robe a la francaise are just beautiful and amazing (if outdated but I suppose royals still have to cover up)
Bethany Sartain
Can someone talk about the scene where the opera singer is performing in what is suppose to be an eccentric but still polite ball and has *full legs* showing? There she was, in *public*, full legs and up to *that* point in the show no legs have been seen in public view (aside from the sex scenes of course) XD I could forgive all the other silliness of this fantasy regency-era fanfic romance drama but that was jarring to me ...the fashion should reflect the cultural norms of this fictional society and it could stand a little consistency, and it raises the question if this period-inspired society cares about modest clothes at all or not. And remember this particular society deems a rumor of a woman being unchaperoned with a man for two seconds her "ruin", and strict ideas about modesty tend to go along with patriarchal ideas. It was just jarring to me, although the show doesn't promise accuracy at all so I let it slide..
Olivia Tyner
My main complaint is that Eloise was the only female character that wore a proper day dress, Daphne is always in evening gowns, and it makes her ball gowns so underwhelming, because they're hardly any different from her more "casual" gowns, meanwhile Eloise has this very dramatic shift once we see her dressed for her first ball
Ruby Buttons
I think that added to the characters though. It showed that Daphne had to be on pointe at all times, she could never relax. She never wore a day dress because she had to be on her best at all times, a suitor could show up at any moment and she had to be ready to impress. The same with Eloise, her dramatic transformation signified the great change and social expectations she would now have as a young woman out in society, etc.
Ana Genes
mrs featherington's have some debts with the woman that sell the fabric, so she only can achieve ugly fabric (i think that is they made that colors) that is cheaper than the rest, for her daughters and her... it's not accurate but that is the reason. i think is very 2021 deal.
Dutta U
It is as bad as reign. They could have used natural fabrics, paid attention to the aesthetic. Nawwhh a Chinese polyester market throws up in fanfic regency.
catlover2225
This is the first video of you that I,ve watched and I was so surprised when I saw you name and surname. Are you Polish ?
Great video btw....

Being from the book fandom of bridgerton(cause the book is much much more historically accurate)
&being a historical novels fan itdid felt bit weird at times... But then I just get into the mindset that yeah this is just a fantasy

Opening the series with the tight corset scene told us immediately where this show was going. The could have called it 'spot all the inaccuracies and have fun doing so'. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when I realized that Portia Featherington 'pre-invented' 1950s cocktail frocks and as the series progressed I almost hoped for a barbecue scene organised by Lady Featherington at the Serpentine Lake, the location chosen to do all the perambulation by the 'ton'. The 'mistakes' came thick and fast, one could hardly keep up or track every single one, sometimes I almost thought it deliberately created to give pain to the people obsessed with historical accuracy. French court dress at the English court with a marvelously acted black Queen Charlotte. My thought at that moment was 'My, hasn't Dame Helen Mirren changed!' Her ever changing hairstyles throughout the series had me spellbound. Unlike the hair of our heroine Daphne, did she deliberately cut her fringe too short before the series to challenge the series's hairdressers? Though I had to laugh at her boots she so carelessly abandoned after her early morning ride. So quickly taken off in a matter of a second, the convenience of having a not yet invented zip at the back of each greatly helped Daphne not to be discovered by her servant. There was so much more, and more and more, I could hardly keep up, and I haven't even mentioned any of the inaccuracies in the men's fashions, the general lack of headdress of any kind. And of course, the constant need for new dresses was clearly that the gowns were just worn too often, morning, noon, afternoon, and evenings, when in reality one had different outfits for each time of day, though it is much more fun to parade in one's best finery at the lake and at the opera.

I think the maddest I got was when the duke and duchess were dancing their 'waltz' to the birds section of Vivaldi's Spring. Except it's not in 3/4 so not a waltz, and that particular excerpt lasted MANY times longer than it should without even continuing to the tuneful parts of the piece.
Then there was the blatant violin miming where the violinist wasn't even touching the strings with her bow. I fuckin lost it man.
Freya Catherine
OMG I TOTALLY BROUGHT THE QUEEN'S OUTDATED STYLE UP WHEN I WATCHED IT!
I was like 'the queen's silhouette is sooo out of fashion, and they didn't wear corsets directly on the skin, and tighlacing wasn't that common and where tf is her shift...'
My partner (on being used to me watching a lot of historical fashion content) 'yes dear, your YouTube women would be furious'

I just finished watching Bridgerton and immediately came to watch this video!
In my experience, the “mid-boob empire waist” look is due to inexperienced (or maybe overworked?) tailors not knowing how/when to make a full bust adjustment.
I was in a theatrical production of Pride & Prejudice in 2010 and ended up making my own costume. As I was cutting the pattern I noticed, hold up, that bodice is NOT enough fabric to cover my boobs!!! So I adjusted it. Anyone else with a full bust who had costumes made by a seamstress who just took measurements, decided on a pattern size, and then sewed the pattern as-is, had the mid-boob waist problem.
A few years later I was in Sense & Sensibility and the same thing happened, although in this case I WARNED THEM and the costumers got all snippy with me because they were supposedly ~*~experienced~*~ but wouldn’t you know, everyone but me had a costume that cut them at the nips.
Although I gotta admit that the problem is pretty bad when even Daphne doesn’t get an empire waist that fits!
Joe O'Donnell
The costumes were so bad.

I'm really sad there's not a single cap or bonnet in this show!

As many people have said about this video, just fantasy. Read the book and you will laugh your head off, so not historically accurate. I like your reviews normally, but this time you take the movie too seriously.
Emelie Waldken
I think that the argument of "not everything has to be historically accurate because we need to convey the right emotions and share our ~Vis!oN~" is bullshit. Emma 2020 proved it : costumes can be totally on point historically speaking AND also visually represent a modern cinema team's vision and convey emotions to modern audience. Regency does not need to be all white and cream, and even weird hairstyles can be relatable, in many ways (serious or ridiculous or or or).
MrsMadCookie
First of all, Karolina you are awesome! I don't want to be rude, but I am really interested. Do you have a job? Do you research as historian or something like that? Or maybe you are just a youtuber now?

Ngl I clicked on the show and knew within the first 5min that they don't care about historical accuracy. The show is a fantasy show, not a historical show.

If you choose to surrender your country, your culture, your civilization and your identity to avoid social disapproval you should know that all of history will curse you for your cowardice.
Clarissa Noah
I completely agree! I am always taken out of the movie or show, if it clearly tries to establish a historical setting, but doesn’t match the costumes. For example with The Greatest Showman, I watched it the first time without knowing what it was about, and I had no idea when it took place. I hated the costume and make up design, because everything about it confused me. And it was about a REAL PERSON! With Bridgerton, they gave you context, when it wanted to take place but early on established that this is not the real world. The audience immediately understands, that this is, like you said, a fantasy, a sort of fanfiction. It gives you enough information about the „historical period“ that you kind of know what to expect, but at the same time it makes clear, that this is all for fun and doesn’t really take place in the real 1813.
I didn’t like the dresses of Lady Featherington and a lot of the Heavy make up was too much in my opinion. But overall, it didn’t break the illusion of the show, because you knew everything was a conscious choice and didn’t just feel like they were doing a bad job and weren’t aware of that. So, I agree, it works 🤷🏼♀️
Liv
Everyone is British in the show, and they had training on how to speak with those old English accents, as well as other training. They put a lot of work into what they did, even if they exaggerated many things, it is supposed to be an alternate reality of what could've been, and that's what the story is about. I still find the costumes to be beautiful, because they add a lot of symbolism to the story, even if they are all over the place.
Ian Hornbuckle
You have to remember this show is based off a book series so it’s not supposed to be set in the real world. The set is designed to be way over the top using CG. The costumes are obviously not historically accurate, but they’re awesome
Octopussyist
I just hate that kind of cutting ... which only exists on YT: Ending a phrase - cut - onlyafractionofasecondnextphrase. - It is so fuckin annoying and therefore I am out after 20 Seconds and will never return to this channel again.
Paula Jensen
I think you are adorable but no one expected the show to be historically accurate. It was just good entertainment.

The blue dress i love that color

The fact they had nothing underneath the corsets freaked me so out😂

Can you review the costumes of Harriet (2019) next please? They have corsets.

I do think it is hysterical that man who directed the 2005 Pride and Prejudice intentionally moved the story's setting out of the Regency Era because he thought that the Regency silhouette was not "sexy" enough to be interesting on film.
Maesolmese
7:22 the Cherdleys clip caught me off guard. On point as always, meme mom.
LovelyAngelYuuki
I completely agree! The costumes hit me very hard, right from the beginning and I understood that more than historical, it was "Alternative universe" historical feel. In that way, it strongly reminds me of a book called Incarceron, which tells story of modern world, in which the King has decided to rule out overt and visible use of anything modern, they even dress the same as in 1850s or earlier, they do housework the same way, everything. Bridgerton gave me the same impression, as if it is only pretending to be historical, as if something is stirring in the background, I was expecting to be told it is some alternative universe, alien planet, I dont know... Once I got used to it, however, I appreciated the novelty very much, but completely separate it from true or believable category of historical.

If Utica was born a cis woman. No disrespect. 🙈

please tell me the red lipstick karolina has on what is itttt
BlackCanary87
The books that Bridgerton is based on are not un-analagous to Jane Austen fanfic. The Regency Romance genre (which does NOT include Jane Austen, as she was writing in that era about her era; the Regency Romance, as a modern marketing category, is historical fiction, i.e. written about a past historical period) is heavily inspired by Jane Austen, but, well, things have changed since the actual Regency. Heck, things have changed since Georgette Heyer pioneered the genre in the 1920s! So a lot of things that were invisible or unquestioned in romantic fiction of the Regency Era are actually pulled out and questioned in Regency Romance Novels. The genre is really interesting to explore, but it's important to remember that historical fiction has the goals of fiction, not the goals of history.
Adorably Adorable
You have no idea how beautiful you are do you Karolina?...Educated, Wise and Beauty beyond any Lady I know....we love your videos.
Fubs_the_queen 1996
Frock Flicks (my go to on this stuff, sorry Karolina) have great blog posts on Bridgerton. They talk about how the costume designer (who I think was probably on a pretty strict budget, and spent most of it on choice damasks and velvet fabrics and used what she could elsewhere, and I must say a lot of the fabric is very cheap) says that she wasn’t going for historical accuracy because it takes place in a completely fictional universe. I think she took appropriate creative license with what she was given, a historical world vaguely similar to ours.
She knew costuming sticklers would hate her creations and rake her over the coals, but that she’s cool with it because she knew that what she envisioned didn’t line up with historical accuracy. I think she had fun with it and did her own thing which I applaud her for!
My only criticism is that there are no chemises in sight under those corsets and that they shouldn’t have been wearing corsets but stays because the whole point of the regency style (like modern spanks almost) was to show off your natural figure.
Renee R
I loved the series but I had to suspend my realism lol. The books themselves are airport bookstore smut (which, FANTASTIC) so I didn’t expect much accuracy haha.
M Af
Very interesting, I did not know all of this about costumes. Probably I was too much focused on the main male character, when he DID NOT wear clothes🤣
agircekim
it's just a show, it doesn't claim to be historically accurate. it's not a documentary, no need to take it so serious. they are obviously are going for a fictional take on history, so i find it really weird that people are getting upset because of it. btw this comment isn't directed at karolina or her video, but at the upset people in the comment section and in general.
Lucie Simpson
Currently wearing a corset (I actually own a steel boned long one which supports my entire body weight, but this is the cane one) and I'm wishing my clothes were designed to fit over it. I mean, it's a set shape - it would actually be far EASIER to fit into fashionable clothing if it was designed to follow the shape of a specific corset style than "one-size-fits-all-boobs-hips-and-waists" attitude...
And in the meantime, I have comfortable abdominal compression (for my IBS), back support (once I loosen it; may have done it up a wee bit too tight), a killer hip curve and relief from my tight straps bra rash!
Lenira Oliveira
I hate watch this chanel. This girl is obssesed with "historical acuracy" that she complains about 1920 costume parties...
Cthonis Princess
If you don’t like her content, then why are you watching it?
marbella duarte
bridgerton def gave on the wattpad/regency vibes. great show though, haha.
Gabriel
It was multiculturalist propaganda
Gabby0608
I loved the costumes, jewelry and production. Bristish period romance novels are my fave so no wonder I enjoyed the show. I think people who take it seriously are taking it too seriously. It is a fun and delightful show. With covid and the winter being so dark and gloomy and working as a nurse, watching the show brightens my day. People need to lighten up!
Katherine
All the comments like "they're not going for accuracy, it's a fantasy" clearly did not watch until the end of the video
agircekim
their comments may be directed at people which are really upset about it, there's a lot of it in the comment section.
C
Refusing to watch Bridgerton but I'll watch Karolina~!
Rachel Kibbe
My coworker suggested this to me as a "Historical Romance." Little did I know when I got home it was NOT what I expected. I agree on SOOOO many points and I wish everyone could watch this video OMG.
Cinder Fox
My mom tried to have me watch this show but in the first episode I was pointing out all of the weird historical inaccuracies and she got really mad.
I was gonna send her this video but I don’t think I should...
agircekim
@Cinder Fox i see. i thought she got mad at the accuracies. some older people tend to think that everything shown on tv or in the internet is accurate. my mom sometimes shares obvious fake photos or fake news on facebook, but she doesn't realize it until i point it out to her 🤣
Cinder Fox
@agircekim yeah that’s true but she seems to think that it IS historically accurate, she got mad when I told her it wasn’t
agircekim
it's just a show, it doesn't claim to be historically accurate. it's not a documentary, no need to take it so serious. i find it really weird that people are getting upset because of it.

Some of these could literally be weared by my aunties and my mom to go grocery shopping.

Bridgerton is fanfiction of what most people think the Regency Era was like. Without the flavor... and the gay.
Nana Noah
Sorry but I was in this for the pretty dresses not correctly presented corsets/stays. 😂 We get so few period dramas as it is, I'll happily trade every sewn islet for a new show.
Which is not to say that historical accuracy is irrelevant of course, it's just a lower priority for my historical-garment-ignorant and escapist behind.
Luisa
I read an interview where it's said that they didn't aim for historical accuracy, but rather for a certain aesthetic indeed.
Tania Kyriakou
So true about the tight corset. Not being to see the corset silhouette anyway. What’s the point? So true.
