Me with all my fuzzy stuffed animal hats: ...Huh.
I wear hats all the time. I don't step outside without a hat.
I would say in the 1960s hats were secretly trendy via wigs.
The more indoor plumbing their was, the less interests in hats....
I love my hat and changing it’s fascinator to match my outfit. My favorite fascinator to add to my hat has a dragon eye to look back at people. It actually gets compliments.
Additionally, I want to add that teens are huge marketing targets and where are teens a majority of the day? School, and what do most schools not allow? Hats. They are against most dress codes due to covering people's faces, so I don't think hats will ever go into style.
Schools (at least where I live) don't allow hats. We all grow up getting used to not wearing them, so when we graduate, we forget we can.
I wear hats. Hats, only rarely a cap. Abd a vest, except in the hottest weather. Why? Because current fashions, even for men SUCK LIKE A WHIRLEPOOL TO PERDITION!
Now when hairdressers are shut in the height of nth wave of corona, maybe we should consider wearing hats again.
Yeah the sixteen year old wearing a fedora situation ... yeah the schools I went to growing up didn't allow that. Like they had a weird policy against hats like students got in trouble for wearing them. I think the rumored reasoning was "It's because of the gangs" like ... what gangs? There's no sign of gang activity what so ever in this town like why would gang affiliation be a concern here? And looking back it may have something to do with racism and classism as these schools were very very white and very very middle to upper class, and wearing a hat would make you look less white and poor? Or it could be the islamophobia since that policy really kicked in at all schools in the area post 9/11 and wearing any sort of head wear would signal to mostly the adults that "Oh no you practice a non christian faith, you could be showing yourself as a terrorist we can't have that, take off your hat!" And when I went to college, even during a semester in another country no one cared, like you could wear some absurd ass hat and you may get a comment on it but no one would care. Though the reasons why elementary through high school had that no hat policy was speculation on my part I still don't believe the gang rumors that were allegedly the original reason why kids couldn't wear hats in school.
I love hats and I wear them quite often.
I where the same hat every day, i have very sensitive eyes so everywhere i go outside i wear a hat and sunglasses even in the winter, but wearing my hat (its a baseball hat shape with a lake superior logo on it) but its pretty normal for men in their middle ages to wear baseball caps here in Wisconsin because they are balding and dont want to fix thier hair. I always just wear my hat and put my hair in a low bun, but im one of the only girls in my grade that always wears hats like i do
Personally, I don't give a damn about what people might think of my choice of clothes and accessories and I don't see why anyone should.
This was very interesting and informative. I always wondered about why people stopped wearing hats. Thank you for making this!
I wish we still had hats all the time. The sun is evil and people look at you funny for wearing a hat outside.
"I got tea and a hat, damn the war"-the queen probably
You should make a podcast!!
me, a touhou and TF2 fan: *crying through the whole video*
I love hats and I’m sorry that the trend stopped.
Isn't a cap a hat?
Berety teraz wracają i w bardziej powiedzmy młodszym wydaniu też, nie muszą być babciowe :D + te kapelusze spadające na oczy są chyba całkiem popularne, a przynajmniej się pojawiają w zespołach k-popowych (męskich).
I've always wondered how it factors in that public schools in the US ban wearing hats altogether. Not sure when that rule was instated, but I (born in the 80s) definitely grew up going to schools where all hats were banned. I actually got in trouble for wearing a headband once. After high school, it took me a long time for it to sink that I could wear hats now and I wasn't going to get in trouble.
People wear hats a lot in Australia because of skin cancer. You will find a variety of hats on most fashion websites.
Well, here in Israel hats are still pretty common during the summer months, as they are essential against the sun. Also, married religious jewish women, as well as most ultra-religious jewish men, were hats as a religious duty. Add this to Tel-Aviv's hipsters (who were religious hats as a joke), and around here, however, hat-wearing habit still is very much alive and well. :-)
Nowadays they don't allow wearing hats at schools, I don't really understand why
Hats are fucking cool, you can't change my mind
Indoor Running water and hair washing. Boom, mystery solved.
Industries. Inconvenience caused by hat
Fuck it I'm buying a hat
I have now ordered 3 different ones the last week :) :P and lots of nice flowers and ribbons to dress them up :)
I wanted to be a hat designer when I was young. I was about 8 years old and had so many drawings and sketches.. when I showed a teacher of mine.. she said hats are not in style anymore and I was wasting my time.. sadly I stoped drawing and designing hats after that. I wish I had stuck with these things when I was young and followed my passions.
I always thought about this growing up. I love hats and hat fashion and wondered why we never really wore them anymore. Now I live in Japan and I've noticed how so many of the older women wear them on a daily basis, especially during spring/summer. Not just the older women but the younger generations wear them occasionally or at least more often than in the USA. I wish they'd make a bigger comeback in western countries 😭
Let us start a revolution :)
I love fashion and I love history. Karolina Zebrowska is an angel.
I think it's funny how stores always have a hat section though, and how many people seem to buy them. Where do they go? Sad to think they are just thrown in a closet, but I sure as hell do not see as many people wearing them as I seem to see being sold.
I feel like where at the start of a hat revival, caps and beanies are becoming more common, and social media has made hats seem very desirable to younger generations, so it’ll probably make a comeback soon.
Maybe it's also because women now have to remove their hat too and if you wear a hat your hair won't look good.
My grandmother and great aunts wouldn’t be seen outside without a hat, all the way into the early 70s. Then they were dead and no one wore hats
I started wearing hats a few years ago and I haven't gone back! They really complete an outfit.. I think it's a matter of finding the right hat! :) I alternate between a beret and a wide brim black hat. 🖤
I have few hats and I WEAR THEM. I look good and people would be crazy to make fun of me when it just fits my look so well. Also they are mostly fedora type, so nothing weird ;)It's a style choice and confidence as well, I think, with hats.
I'm a hat wearer myself and have been since the very end of my student years, and one thing that made it difficult for me was the expense of good hats. I wore these terrible wool felt fedoras for a while as a student and was always frustrated that they didn't have the shape they did in movies like Casablanca. After university, I moved to London and with my first pay packet I went to Lock & Co and I haven't bought a hat from anywhere else since. I don't think many people are willing to pay that kind of price for something they're not fully committed to. Perhaps this is more a criticism of fast fashion than anything else though...
My mom always waers a hat ... in my youth I found it stupid, and was bullied that my mom looked redicualus. But since a year or two I find myself being more and more interested in hats :) but I forget to wear them :x
i wear a hat sometimes, a black velvet one in winter and i used to have a wide straw one from africa but i lost it wahhhh
It's good that bucket hats are getting popular at least and I love how nowadays we can see 80's and 90's fashon influence in modern clothing.
Showers were the end of hats. Quite simple really. With showers it became easy to wash hair and keep it clean.
I would have never imagined a person being bullied for a fancy hat.. Maybe some jokes made by friends, but nothing more serious
I have worn a flat cap or baseball cap every day of my life since I began high school. My head gets cold in Winter and the Sun gets in my eyes on clear days.
My newsboys hat is practically the only hat I wear and a wide brimed fedora is my nr. 2.
Ameee tu vídeo! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Used to wear a hat all the time, but then I went to a school where you weren’t allowed to wear hats and then I got a job where you weren’t allowed to wear a hat. So now I don’t even think about my hat anymore because it’s been years since I could wear it on a regular basis.
i cant wear a hat becaue i have liberty spikes/mohawk, but now im thinking about getting many little tiny miniatures of hats and putting one on each spike. like the fanciest of hats, all tiny, just jabbed on top of em.
This made me laugh so hard! Thank you.
You know, I got this idea during quarantine, I have a lot of bracelets, 76, and I’m still making more, when I see my friends again, I will wear ALL my bracelets. (And I usually would meet them at my homeschooling co-op, it closed for COVID, but IF it opens this year, it will probably be around early September since that’s when the semester used to start, early September and early February. So *if* it were to open, it would be relatively warm and I’d be wearing shorts) I would wear one of my short socks and one of my longer socks, and after watching this, i wanna wear a hat too. The idea is to confuse and weird out my friends, and if I can learn French and not forget everything, I might just start talking to them in French. I’m gonna be very weird, and extra. This comment took way too long to type.
I wouldn't say I got bullied for wearing hats, but they do draw some attention. Also the amount of times I've gotten flack for telling other people they need to wear a hat when we had a hike planned or something. Ugh. (Anyway they overheated and agreed to wear my back-up hat that I always bring because no one listens to me.)My hats aren't really a fashion choice so more as utilitarian. I mostly only acquire them when I go somewhere I need a hat and forget a hat so I have to buy another - like beach trips.
Here in paraguay and I think pretty much all Latin-America, using a hat is pretty normal and fits to the standards. They are made artesanal and used pretty much every day for protecting one from the sun, lower class and higher class use it.
Hat's are such a nessesary clothing item though. I would gave died working at the state fair withought it. The sun is a killer.
John F. Kennedy is often credited with getting Americans to stop wearing hats.
Well if you are allergic to sun you tend to wear a big hat in summer because a sunbrella as i like to call it is really annoying
We weren't even allowed to wear hats in school (for what reason I never knew)
Every time I go for a walk in my city centre and see lady in nice dress with a derby hat it makes my day. A peace of elegance in our casual days)
Ya know what you’re right I’ve never seen anyone wear a hat...🙄
I’ve only ever received compliments when I wear my hats out in public.
To be fair with this kind of comparison you have to compare corresponding social classes, not the fashion of the upper class from a century ago with the fashion of the working class from a century later. If you compare the kind of headgear a Dark Age peasant or a 18th century farmer would wear, well they are not so disimilar in terms of fanciness and overall material cost than what it is nowadays. A roughed up felt hat, a woolen simple cap, or a medieval hood, are kind of the equivalent of modern baseball caps, bonnets or hoodies. What fell off fashion are the elaborate items from the 19th century, when everything was almost regulated, for the better or the worse. But people still wear hats, not just the same kind of hats.
Monty Python was right. People aren't wearing enough hats!
hats are even banned in schools in America 💀 rip hats
People started worshipping the crusty tan look and no longer cared to protect their skin.
My brother and I rocked hats in high school. And I don’t mean baseball caps
Am I the only one on the planet wearing a hat, because I want to be shielded from the sun? 🤔 Sunscreen *and* a hat.
In England we stopped wearing hats because clothes were rationed during and for a while after World War II. Simple.
I got my first bucket hat last month and got a new one this month and will get a new one next month, i also have a cute straw hat lookin thing, I love hats 👒
I remember from the time I was twelve, anytime I went out with my mom, she would remind me to wear my hat and my gloves. I still wear a hat most of the time. I love hats. and we most definitely need to get back to wearing hats.
have two custom-made hats for winter, to match my 50s-style coat. And screw everyone! Going to have some for spring/autumn. And for summer I have three, so I'm going to wear them, because its elegant, an pretty, and it covers my face from sun! SO! MORE HATS!!!! LET'S WEAR HATS!!!!!!
Oh my dear. Dont get bullied out of wearing hats. They are so cool. And nice
I love hats! The 1960's targeted the Baby Boomers because they were the first generation with their own disposable income, and it's been that way ever since. People wear sneakers as every day shoes paying hundreds of dollars for a cheap product with a label vs shoes, this was another marketing ploy directed at young people that became adult footwear.
Jewish people: a-what now?
You actually got bullied for wearing a hat? 😱 people really have nothing better to do. I love hats, especially in summer, I prefer to wear a straw hat to protect my eyes from the sun than sunglasses. It is considered eccentric, I've never been bullied for it but I found that I attract more attention, both friends and strangers feel the need to ask and comment on my headwear.
I mean I love beanies with my jacket so ...wait is a beanie even a hat
Huh. Now that I think about it, I am the only person I see wearing a hat practically year round... 🤔 I feel the need to carry my shade with me 🧛♀️
The cluttered hallway reciprocally plan because gear critically watch failing a amuck element. murky, breezy chimpanzee
My husband got himself a nice, felt stetson in 2015 in the US, and then returned to his home country, Germany. The most notable reactions he told me of were these:A small girl in the market asking: "Mom, is that a real cowboy?"And another small girl calling out: "Hello, cowboy!"In his opinion, it is not about getting used to the world, it's getting the world used to you. You can make something your style by just wearing it regularly.
When I was young I danced ballet & then briefly modeled. So wearing clothing to affect a certain persona is 2nd nature to me. I'm a happy old crone now & even less concerned with the dictates of fashion. I have a hat collection. Including, but not limited to: a pink Easter bonnet, a large frothy Church/Derby creation, my HuggyBear pimp hat, a bright red fleece # that entertains small children @ the holidays, an amazing black, huge brimmed summer hat, 3 witch's conical hats, multiple straw gardening hats, and 2 waxed canvas, dapper, men's outback style hats for foraging/mushroom hunting. I don't wear a hat every day, but when I do, I'm not boring.
“Yeah hats are cool why don’t we have hats?? 1600’s had the same thing how did we get so nice and lose it?”“War”“Oh”
I wear a Stetson Gun Club Pork Pie fedora in winter, and a straw Dobbs in summer. Hats need to come back.
I was in a production of The Music Man once, and my big beautiful hat MADE my costume, and was such fun to wear!
Although...I was a teenager in the 60’s, and my mother made me a coat and matching pillbox hat. But it was only worn to church.
I'm confused, why is the comment section full of people saying they get laughed at for wearing dresses a lot. I always wear a dress or skirt and I've had no problems.
Okay that’s it. I’m bringing hats back in the new roaring 20’s.
Thank you so much for this piece :) I love hats and know what you mean when you say you got bullied for wearing one. Let's be the fashion resistance and make hats cool again!
Niepraktyczne.
I think now, as we probably won't come back to shacking hands as easily, we should start wearing them again to lift them for welcoming each other
We just became addicted to having soot gathering on top of our heads. Its status. Its like "wow what a dirty head he must be from the big city"
I still wear hats-
I love hats and wear them whenever the fancy strikes me. I have lots of baseball style hats and some "fancier" ones too, but nothing that's too much bigger than my baseball hats. I don't care for really big hats. And I'm not counting my knit winter hats in that. There's a few other styles of hat that I'd love to have, and will eventually add to my collection.
Could wearing hats be to cover un-washed hair. ?
Hats? Gloves? I'd be happy if people didn't wear their pajamas to the store.
Do you mean occasionally or everyday? 🤨
I live in Paris and nobody gets bullied here for wearing a hat. However they are more of a winter accessory to keep you warm or complete a long coat chic look.
People wear hats all the time where I live 🤷♀️ Los Angeles
I love hats so I'm going to contribute to the return
Haha I once said I look foward to becoming an old little lady, because then I'll be "allowed" to wear hats 😅 Don't think that will change but it just shows how much I actually would like to wear hats! Now at age 41 I feel like I need nobodys permission or approval, I can do whatever, I don't need to wait until I'm 80 😁 But... There are no hats to buy! My head size is also a bit bigger than most ladies hats 😒 So the few that exist (mostly online, hardly any in actual stores) doesn't fit nicely anyway. So... No hats for me. I love love love the fashion from the 50ies and 60ies, the elegant matrons with beautiful hats and gloves that is... Pill box hats and the like especially ❤️ Aw how I wish we could all be elegant like that... That's the only thing I actually like about the winters 😅 The outdoor accessories 😊🥰
Yeah I was laughed at for wearing a fur Panama today lol
